“The alternative to being is reacting, and reacting interrupts being and annihilates.”

Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

Foundation
The premise of Hypnotherapy is to utilize a person’s unconscious mind to facilitate change. This happens when the Hypnotherapist guides the individual into a deeply relaxed and focused state, allowing them to access their unconscious processing and functioning. What does this all mean? As early as infancy, humans are not able to process all events that we experience on a conscious level—that is to say—we do not make the conscious effort to sit with our experiences. Much of this occurs unconsciously, or outside of our awareness. An example of this would be during sleep in the form of dreams. Additionally, experiences are also stored in our body, through physiological and/or psychological memory. Hypnotherapy utilizes the mind + body connection as an avenue to uncover how a person has adapted in order to survive their environment, which includes adopted core beliefs about themselves or the world around them. By identifying beliefs, behaviors, and ways of relating that no longer serve the individual, we can then work to process, understand, unlearn, and depending on the case, replace them with healthier ways of being.

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a phenomena that everyone experiences everyday. A person in a deeply focused state is highly responsive to an idea or image, opening them up to suggestion. Using Hypnosis, a person is able to learn how to become more skilled with their imagination, attention, beliefs, and motivation. By doing so, they can influence their own bodily functions and psychological responses towards the completion/realization of making their goals a reality.

What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the method of using hypnosis to facilitate changes in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Hypnotherapy appeals to the client’s senses, taps into powerful emotions, and uses motivation to reframe their situations—past and present— in order to let go of limiting belief systems, self sabotaging thoughts, and so much more. When those ingrained, conditioned responses no longer take hold, a client is able to move forward into a more fulfilling life.

Can I be Hypnotized?
Hypnosis is a state of increased awareness, attention, and relaxation (what most people would call a trance), and so with that logic, anyone can be hypnotized. In most cases involving a dyad (hypnotist/subject or hypnotherapist/client), it is important to note that rapport, or a sense of safety and trust may heavily influence efficacy. For most people, hypnosis can be a vulnerable position in the sense that their inner conflicts may surface, so it’s imperative that a hypnotherapist is trustworthy, non-judgmental, and professional. Additionally, the premise is to bypass the conscious mind, and so being able to follow directions and relax add to a person’s hypnotizability. However, although it’s possible that everyone can be hypnotized, factors, such as not wanting to be, fear, or anxiety, or an overactive mind may impact someone’s hypnotizability and the depth of hypnosis (light, medium, the depth at which someone can be in ‘trance.’

The majority of people can achieve a Light trance, some can go further into an Apparent somnambulism, while most of hypnotherapy is conducted within a state of True somnambulism. An Esdaile state, the deepest one can go, is accessible to only a small portion of the population.

In short, everyone can be hypnotized, but not everyone will be hypnotized, or they may not go noticeably as deep.
